Olimme alun perin hääkuvaajan suhteen myöhässä liikkeellä. Olimme varanneet hyvissä ajoin hääpaikan ja vihkiajan, ja olin ostanut kenties turhankin ajoissa hääpuvun, mutta kaikki muut hääjärjestelyt aloitimme vasta tammikuussa 2020, kun alkuperäiseen hääpäiväämme oli reilut puoli vuotta aikaa. Kuvaajan osalta se oli liian myöhään.
Samuli on hyvin visuaalinen ihminen, ja hänellä oli voimakkaita näkemyksiä siitä, miltä hääkuvaajamme portfolion tulisi näyttää. Kaikkein mieluiten olisimme halunneet hääkuvaajaksemme mielettömän lahjakkaan kihlajaiskuvaajamme Marina Baklanovan, mutta hän asuu Yhdysvalloissa ja pelkäsimme, että tulisi kohtuuttoman kalliiksi kutsua hänet Suomeen varta vasten häitämme kuvaamaan. Kotimaisista kuvaajista Laura Karlin herätti meidän molempien kiinnostuksen, mutta hänellä oli hääpäivällemme jo varaus. Kenenkään muun suomalaiskuvaajan portfolio ei tuntunut meistä molemmista juuri meille sopivalta.
Lopulta päätimme hintahuolistamme huolimatta pyytää Marinalta tarjousta hääkuvauksesta Suomessa. Hänelläkin oli kuitenkin jo meidän hääpäivällemme toinen hääkuvaus sovittuna.
Aloin olla epätoivoinen. Juuri oikealta tuntuvan kuvaajan löytäminen oli minulle hyvin tärkeää, ja ymmärsin liian myöhään, että kuvaaja olisi pitänyt varmistaa jo siinä vaiheessa, kun alun perin löimme hääpäivän lukkoon. Marina tarjosi apuaan ja antoi meille listan tuntemistaan kuvaajista, joiden aiemmista töistä arveli meidän pitävän.
Listan kärjessä oli Bryce Lafoon, Marinan puolituttu joka hänen tietojensa mukaan saattoi olla suunnittelemassa tulevana kesänä matkaa Pohjoismaiden suunnalle. Katsoimme ensimmäiseksi hänen portfolionsa, ja olimme molemmat lumoutuneita. Kuvat olivat erilaisia kuin Marinan mutta todella, todella upeita ja meille sopivan näköisiä.
Sydän pamppaillen lähetin hänelle viestin – ja sain erittäin innostuneen vastauksen! Bryce oli todellakin suunnittelemassa kesäksi lomamatkaa, eikä mihin tahansa Pohjoismaahan vaan nimenomaisesti Suomeen. Hän ei ollut vielä lyönyt lukkoon matkapäiviään ja hän innostui todella paljon ajatuksesta, että pääsisi Suomen-lomallaan näkemään ja kuvaamaan paikalliset häät. Hän kertoi uskovansa kohtaloon, ja meistä molemmista tuntui, että tiemme oli Tarkoitus kohdata.
Tapasimme kolmen kesken videopuhelun välityksellä, ja kerroimme Samulin kanssa Brycelle kaikenlaista itsestämme, toisistamme ja suhteestamme. Olimme tuolloin Samulin kanssa asuneet Suomessa vasta puolisen vuotta, ja meistä oli ihanan kodikasta rupatella amerikkalaisen kanssa amerikkalaiseen tapaan. Ymmärsin puhelun aikana, että amerikkalainen kuvaaja olisi juuri meille oikea valinta ihan jo siksikin, että kameran edessä olosta herkästi kiusaantuva Samuli rentoutuu vieraidenkin amerikkalaisten seurassa paljon helpommin kuin vieraiden suomalaisten.
Bryce selvästikin piti meistä ja oli entistäkin innostuneempi ajatuksesta, että pääsisi osallistumaan suureen päiväämme. Kun hän puhelun jälkeen teki meille tarjouksen, hän oli selvästi hinnoitellut sen niin, että hinta ei muodostuisi esteeksi hänen palkkaamiselleen. Matkakuluja hänellä ei ole yleensäkään tapana hääkuvauskeikoista periä, vaan hän on lähtökohtaisesti valmis matkustamaan kaukaisiinkin kohteisiin omalla kustannuksellaan.
Pian etätapaamisemme jälkeen teimme amerikkalaiseen tapaan molempia osapuolia sitovan kirjallisen sopimuksen, jossa sovimme hänen tulevan hääkuvaajaksemme heinäkuussa 2020. Olin pakahtua onnesta, kun asia oli lopulta ratkennut parhain päin.
Alle kahta kuukautta myöhemmin kaikki oli toisin. Rajat olivat kiinni ja matkustaminen mahdotonta. Amerikkalainen kuvaajamme ei tuntunutkaan enää mielettömältä onnenpotkulta, vaan olin todella stressaantunut ajatuksesta, että jäisimme pahimmassa tapauksessa kokonaan ilman kuvaajaa, jos hän ei lopulta pääsisikään tulemaan.
Tilanne ratkesi, kun päätimme siirtää häitämme. Bryce suhtautui tilanteeseen upeasti. Hänen lomamatkansakin oli tietystikin peruuntunut pandemian aiheuttamien matkustusrajoitusten vuoksi, ja hän oli valmis rakentamaan uudet matkasuunnitelmansa uuden hääpäivämme ympärille. Kun siirsimme häitämme uudestaan ja otin häneen yhteyttä siirtääkseni varaustamme toisenkin kerran, hän oli itse asiassa iloinen uutisesta. Hänelle nimittäin syntyi viime kesänä lapsi, ja ensi kesä on siksi hänen Suomen-matkalleen huomattavasti parempi ajankohta kuin viime kesä olisi ollut.
Nyt rokotus- ja pandemiatilanne on jo sellainen, että olen alkanut taas suhtautua varovaisen luottavaisesti siihen, että Bryce lopulta pääsee kuvaamaan häämme. Kuvista tulee varmasti todella upeita.
