DIY kierrätyskynttilät

Aiemmassa kynttiläpostauksessa kerroin tulevasta kynttiläpaja-projektista. Olemme siis pitkin kevättä kerännyt tyhjiä jäätelöpurkkeja ja kynttilänjämiä tutuilta ja tuntemattomilta kierrätyskynttilöiden tekemistä varten, ja vihdoin viime viikolla pääsimme hommiin. Helle ja ulkona järjestetty kynttiläpaja ei ehkä ollut paras kombo, mutta muut voi nyt sitten oppia meidän virheistä! 😀

Ensin tyhjiin jätskipurkkeihin teipattiin kannet kiinni. Teipatessa ei kannata säästellä, sillä kuuma steariini tulee herkästi läpi, jos teippaukset eivät ole riittävät. Tämän jälkeen purkkien pohjat leikattiin pois.

Kynttilänjämiä voi pyytää tutuilta ja esimerkiksi ravintoloista. Lisäksi kannattaa ostaa askartelukaupasta puhdasta steariinia, koska kynttilänjämien materiaalin laadusta ei voi tietää.

Kynttilänjämät pilkottiin hieman pienemmiksi. Kynttilänjämät kannattaa jakaa väreittäin, ellei halua ruskeita kynttilöitä. Valkoisistakin kynttilänjämistä tulee vaaleanharmaita kynttilöitä uudelleensulatuksen jälkeen, mutta jos tämä häiritsee, voi kynttilät pintavärjätä lopuksi.

Kynttilänjämät sulatettiin vanhassa kattilassa, ja sekaan lisättiin puhdasta steariinia. Vanhoja kattiloita löytyy edullisesti kirppikseltä, mutta myös metallinen iso purkki (esim. kurkkupurkki) käy tähän.

Sulanut massa kaadetaan muotteihin vähitellen. Ensimmäisen massakerroksen kaatamisen yhteydessä laitetaan muotin pohjalle sydänlanka. Sydänlankaa saa ostettua askartelukaupoista.

Massan pitää antaa jäähtyä kunnolla ennen seuraavaa kerrosta, sillä muutoin kynttilään jää helposti kuoppa keskelle. Jäähtymisen odottelu oli aika haastavaa, kun helteessä kynttilät eivät meinanneet jähmettyä millään. Nyt osa kynttilöistä onkin kuoppaisia, ja odottaa fiksausta.

Sydänlanka tuettiin tikulla, jotta se pysyy keskellä steariinin jäähtyessä. Kynttilänteko voi olla aika sotkuista puuhaa, joten suojaa kynttiläpajan tilat hyvin tai touhua ulkona. Hellettä en suosittele. 😀
